The approachable three-click meter usually plays well, and considering the distance, surface, and wind direction to deliver a perfect shot never ceases to satisfy. Stepping back onto the links, selecting the right club and ball for the job, and teeing off across the eight courses on offer (as well as dozens of minigames) is still as fun as it was in the previous title.

As sports go, golf remains the most prominent everything in the story is told through the lens of a golf-crazed world, and that often plays to the title’s strengths. Thanks to Golf Story’s charming, nostalgic presentation and novel sports/RPG fusion, Sports Story has long been one of my most anticipated sequels. The gameplay is squarely in the “easy to learn, difficult to master” camp, a sure sign of success for any sports game or RPG.Golf Story was one of the biggest surprises in the Switch’s extremely strong first year on the market. There’s also disc gold and drone golf minigames, and a robust two-player local co-op mode for even more variety. You’ll encounter unique challenges on beaches and haunted swamps alongside prep club fairways. Course variety is a key factor in keeping the gameplay interesting.

This isn't your standard PGA tour, either. Golf Story is a bit more action-oriented than many old-school RPGs, as it tasks you to time your swings and power levels using a meter.

You choose your equipment, aim carefully, and execute. You quickly realize that golf mechanics and combat mechanics are incredibly similar and that swords and spells are just the fantastical cousins of drivers and wedges. Then there’s the golf! Most RPGs utilize turn-based combat to provide the action and this is no different. Everybody talking at you, but you don’t hear a word they’re saying.
